Bill Gates has drunk a glass of water made from human faeces, to showcase technology he said could provide clean water in the developing world. The Microsoft founder said he wanted to begin sending processing plants around the world after tests later this year. The project was welcomed by WaterAid, which said that it could particularly help in urban areas. According to the charity, some 748 million people worldwide lack clean drinking water. In a video posted on his blog, Mr Gates watched as the human waste was fed into the processor, before drinking the end product from a glass. “The water tasted as good as any I’ve had out of a bottle. And having studied the engineering behind it, I would happily drink it every day. It’s that safe,” he wrote in the blogpost. In the video, the developer of the Omniprocessor system, Peter Janicki, says the raw “sewer sludge” is first boiled, during which process the water vapour is separated from the solids. Those solids are then put into a fire, producing steam that drives an engine producing electricity for the system’s processor and for the local community.

The water is put through a cleaning system to produce drinking water. “Why would anyone want to turn waste into drinking water and electricity?” Gates asked. The answer, he wrote, was because “diseases caused by poor sanitation kill some 700,000 children every year, and they prevent many more from fully developing mentally and physically”. He added: “If we can develop safe, affordable ways to get rid of human waste, we can prevent many of those deaths and help more children grow up healthy.”

The 13-year-old girl, who is unidentified, was first treated by remedies from the indigenous culture she was from, according to a photograph posted on Instagram by the username ‘juventudmedica’.


A month later she was eventually brought to Carcaras, Venezuela,for medical treatment.
One doctor, who has seen the photograph, told MailOnline the girl will need her leg amputated but is still likely to die from the snake venom.
Dr Arun Ghosh, a private GP in Liverpool, said: ‘Snake venom is very complicated and depends on the species of snake.
‘But the picture shows clearly severe tissue necrosis that will need amputation, though she still may die from this due to the nature of the poison.
‘The whole lower leg is black, it’s spreading up. Looking at the rest of her body she’s showing signs of muscle wastage from the poison. Her other leg is thin. It’s likely she will still die.’
He added that the necrosis has led to a condition called rhabdomyolysis, in which muscle tissue will begin to die throughout the body.
Rhabdomyolysis can result in damage to the kidneys, which coupled with low blood pressure, can lead to kidney failure and even death if left untreated, he said.
Being treated with local remedies probably meant she was given antibiotics, but not treatment to adequately control poisoning from the snake venom, which contains agents that paralyse the nerves and cause the blood to clot.
Dr Ghosh said: ‘This girl has had classic rural treatment which is often only able to treat local infection secondary to the bite (at best say equal to antibiotics).
‘But she is unlikely to have received anti-venom treatment (which entails giving  treatment to stop blood clotting) to keep her blood flowing through her body.’
The photograph’s caption said the girl also suffered a broken elbow from the incident with the snake.
The bite caused a laceration to the artery in her leg and the resulting bleeding led to what’s known as ‘compartment syndrome’.
This is a serious condition when pressure within a compartment such as the leg causes a decrease in blood supply to the affected muscles

A nine-year-old schoolboy has become one of the world’s youngest grooms for the second time – marrying his 62-year-old wife again.

Looking a little taller in last year’s silver tuxedo, baby faced Saneie Masilela clutched the hand of Helen Shabangu as they repeated their vows one year on.

The second marriage ceremony was this time held at the home of the blushing bride in Ximhungwe in Mpumalanga, South Africa, in front of around 100 guests.

Wide-eyed residents looked on as the married mother-of-five shared a piece of cake, a toast and even a kiss with her young groom Sanele – and long-term husband Alfred Shabangu, 66.

Last year the boy, from nearby Tshwane, tied the knot with bride Helen after claiming he had been told by his dead ancestors to wed.

Shockingly his family took the message from the heavens seriously and hurriedly forked out £500 for the bride and a further £1,000 for the big day.

But little Sanele -the youngest of five children – wouldn’t rest until the couple followed through with South African traditions insisting they have the second ceremony to make their marriage official.

Despite stunned villagers branding the act ‘sickening’ the boy’s family defended the union saying it was just a ritual and not legally binding.

‘One day Sanele would grow normally and have family of his own and get married one day, all this ceremony is for making ancestors happy. We are playing.’

Sanele and his bride did not sign a marriage certificate and do not have to live together.

Both have gone back to their normal lives.

Helen’s husband of 30 years and builder Alfred, attended both wedding ceremonies along with the couples five children.

The 67-year-old added: ‘My kids and I are happy because we don’t have a problem with her marrying the boy – and I don’t care what other people say.’

Female Teacher Defiles 4-Year-Old Pupil in Lagos

At Golden Sharon Nursery and Primary School (formerly Kingdom Sharon), located at Ijaba area of Ota, Ogun State, an incident occurred on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, that has created panic in the family of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson (not real name).

One of their twins, four-year-old Lydia (not real name), who attended the school, was defiled by a female teacher, Olajumoke Oyewole, in a fashion they suspected had ritualistic intent.

Lydia, who is a pupil of Nursery One with her twin brother, got home on Tuesday afternoon and started complaining of a nagging pain in her private part. But things she later revealed confounded her mother.

Saturday PUNCH decided not to reveal the real names of the victim and her parents because of the nature of the case.

The mother, who spoke with this correspondent on Thursday at Ota after a visit to the police station where the accused female teacher had been taken, said after Lydia came home after school, she began complaining consistently when she wanted to urinate.

She said, “I asked her what was wrong and she said, ‘stone.’ I thought she meant that somebody stoned her and I waved off the matter that she would be alright.

“But when the pain persisted and she kept complaining, I decided to check why she was feeling pain there. That was when I discovered a wound on her private part.

“I was alarmed and I asked her who did that to her. She immediately mentioned Aunty Jummy (the accused.) I asked what the teacher did to her and she said the lady dipped her finger in her private part and brought out a stone which she used to scratch her there.

“The lady is not her class teacher. She (Oyewole) teaches another class beside my daughter’s. I did not understand this and I quickly called my daughter’s class teacher on the phone to help investigate the issue. She said I should come the following day but I decided to go that same day.

“I reported the matter to the head of the school and while we were leaving, we went past the (accused’s) class. My daughter said, ‘Mummy come, this is where she did it. She sat on that chair and put me on her lap and used the stone.’ She pointed to the teacher’s chair in the classroom. The lady was not around at the time.”

According to the woman, who was clearly confused when she spoke with our correspondent, the way her daughter was defiled was strange. She said she had to take her daughter to the family clinic to conduct a test on the little girl.

Meanwhile, she had apprised her husband who is away at work in Benin, Edo State, of the incident. He instructed her to report the matter to the police as soon as possible.

“The doctor examined her and asked me to have a look at my daughter’s private part. She explained that apart from the wound from which my daughter was bleeding, her hymen had been torn. The doctor said only a state hospital could give a report on such test since it was suspected that a crime might have been committed,” the woman said.

Nigerian Woman Beats 3 Year Old Sick Child To Death For Vomitting

The Lagos State Police Command for allegedly beating her husband’s three-year-old niece, Deborah Bassey, to death, has arrested a 21-year-old woman, Rebecca Bassey. According to police authorities, the suspect beat up the girl because she vomited and defecated on herself. A police source told reporters on Thursday  that the incident occurred at Ijaiye Ojokoro area of the state on July 22, 2013.

He said, “The victim (Deborah) lost her mother in 2010. Early this year, Deborah’s father was evicted from his home and he decided to send Deborah and his second child to go and stay with his brother, Vincent, until he settles down.

“Deborah and her nine-year-old sister were living with Vincent and his wife, Rebecca, in a one-room apartment at Powerline, Jankara, Ijaiye Ojokoro. However, Rebecca was always maltreating the two children.”

 

According to police investigations, on the day of the incident,   Deborah woke up around 5.30am with a high temperature.

The three-year-old girl was said to have started vomiting and defecating soon after. This was said to have angered Rebecca, who instead of administering treatment to the child, decided to beat her up.

A police source said, “In the process of beating the girl, the suspect pushed her and she fell, hitting her head against the edge of a wooden chair in the room.”

Reporters learnt that the victim started to bleed from the head. Some neighbours rushed her to Ahmadiyya Hospital, where she was referred to Orile Agege General Hospital where she later died.

A woman leader in the area, Kudirat Ogunseyi, was said to have reported the matter to Ijaye Ojokoro Police Division after which the suspect was arrested.

Some neighbours, in their statements at the police station, described the suspect as a hot-tempered woman, who was fond of beating the children.

“The way that woman beats up the children was very worrying to the extent that the landlord had threatened to evict them,” one of the statements reads.

  Vincent  told the police that he was not present when his wife beat his niece to death.

“I was not at home when the incident happened. I am a photographer during   daytime  but I   work as a vigilante  group member.  So I hardly sleep at home,” he said.

The suspect however said she did not kill the victim deliberately. She said she only pushed Deborah and she hit her head against the chair.

 “I am a housewife and I have a 10-month-old baby. I did not mean to kill her (Deborah). I only pushed her because she vomited and defecated on the floor. I was only trying to correct her. It was not deliberate. I am a mother too and I know how I would feel if my son was killed,” she said.

It was learnt that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

A source at the SCID said the police were waiting for autopsy. He added that if other wounds were found on  other parts of the victim’s body, it would prove that the victim was indeed tortured before her death.

When contacted on the telephone, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back.

“I don’t know how news of what happened got out, it goes to show that walls have ears, but I can tell you that the whole family is embarrassed. When we are walking on the streets we see that people are talking about us and somehow you become paranoid and think that everyone who laughs, whispers or looks at you is talking about the se’xual relationship of my son and daughter,” she said. The father was not available to comment. The discredited sister told Sunday News that the incident had given her sleepless nights and destroyed her family.

“My father now hates us and I can tell that he is disgusted by the way he looks at me. I am sorry for what I did and I wish I had not done it. My brother was chucked out of the house and he now lives in Pumula South with my mother,” said the tearful 14-year-old. Sunday News called the disgraced brother last Friday morning and he denied that he was sleeping with his sister and vowed that he was going to make his stepmother pay for tarnishing his image.

“I love my sister and my stepmother is jealous of that. She has always been on my case because I don’t treat her like my mother. She is the reason my parents’ marriage ended. I hate her. She is lying that I was sleeping with my sister, I can never do that because it’s unnatural,” he said .

'I kept asking them to stop but they carried on, laughing at me. I was really scared when they were stamping on my head. I couldn't escape - they had locked the front door and there were two of them, I had no chance.
'They cut my hair and then put my face into a mirror and said "you don't look so pretty now". Maybe they were jealous of my looks. I will never forgive them for what they did.'
Katie's injuries were so severe her mother Denise didn't even recognise her in the hospital bed.

Sentencing the two women at Minshull Street Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Geake said: 'That night, possibly affected by a cocktail of drugs and alcohol, you allowed your darker sides to get the better of you in a most bizarre way. It was quite inexplicable.'
Garrity was sentenced to four years in prison and Raby 40 months in a young offenders' institution after both pleading guilty.
McNamara originally fell out with Raby after the latter had accused her of stealing her mobile phone in November.
Later that day, Raby phoned her up apologising and asked her to come to an address in Farnworth, Bolton.

After she arrived at the house with another friend, the two women pulled her by the hair into the kitchen and started kicking and beating her.
McNamara's friend attempted to intervene, but was threatened and told to leave.
She was then taken by taxi to a second house, where two men joined in the attack.
During the attack, McNamara lost conscious repeatedly.
As well as being punched, kicked and stamped on, she was burned with cigarettes and Garrity threw a kitchen knife at her.
A female neighbour visited the house the following morning, where Garrity and Raby showed what they had done to McNamara.
They told the woman they would kill her if she told police.
After being hospitalised, McNamara spent four months receiving treatment as an outpatient. Her hearing has been permanently damaged.

A morgue attendant had s*x with more than 100 corpses at the mortuary where he worked, prosecutors claimed yesterday.

Kenneth Douglas, 55, took advantage of 16 years of night shifts to abuse the women’s bodies.

He was frequently high on drink or drugs during his macabre activities, which were only discovered after police carried out DNA tests.

Douglas is already serving a prison sentence after admitting having s*x with the nearly beheaded corpse of Karen Range, who was 19 when she was murdered in 1982.

But he now faces two identical charges after forensic experts inHamilton County, Indianaanalysed evidence from twowomen who were murdered in 1991.

Police believe the number of bodies he abused could be more than a hundred, though he claims to not remember any identities.

‘I am sure there are more [victims]. I’m certain of it,’Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said.

‘This guy’s just a pig. I can’t explain why someone would do something like this. This is off-the-charts weird.

‘We’ll never know how many victims there are because he doesn’t know. We probably won’t ever know the scope of his abuse.

‘Frankly, it’s frightening. [When he talks to the authorities about the abuse] his numbers go from one to three or four to “a lot” to maybe over a hundred.

‘I think it’s fair to speculate that he’s been doing this all the time, when he’s able and had the opportunity.’

Police examined Douglas’ activities after he was convicted of abusing Range’s corpse last year.

They identified 15 bodies which they believe could have been violated by the night attendant, recovering DNA evidence from two.

These were the six-months-pregnant corpse of Charlene Edwards, who was strangled on October 1, 1991.

The second was Angel Hicks, 24.

Crucial swabs were taken during post-mortems of both women. But only advances in DNA over the last 18 years linked Douglas to the crimes.

The families of the women were contacted when he was charged.

‘It’s fair to say they were devastated by this news,’ Mr Deters said. ‘I feel badly for the families who are never going to know.

He added: ‘I hope I never see anybody like Kenneth Douglas again.’
